KIDICAL MASSIVE – A Celebration of Family Cycling in London
Families, including children of all ages, will take to their bicycles, on Saturday 19 September, for London’s first ever ‘Kidical Mass’. The event, named after the global ‘Critical Mass’ monthly urban bike ride phenomenon, is to draw attention to the 1,000s of families who already cycle in London and to show transport planners and politicians that roads need to be designed for smaller riders and family journeys as well as lycra-clad commuters. The riders will be showing that Kids are Traffic Too and that cities that plan for family biking are more liveable, sustainable, profitable, and FUN! Featuring, bubbles, balloons and lots of noise.
Kidical Mass has been happening in other cities around the world for the last few years. As family cycling using child seats, cargo bikes, tandems and lots of variations has really taken off in London, many families want to share the fun and raise awareness so they have come together to get the event going in London.
Kidical Mass is a legal, safe and fun bike ride for kids, kids at heart, and their families created by cycling advocate and local Safe Routes to Schools programme manager Shane Rhodes who led the first ride held in April 2008 in Eugene, Oregon. It has now spread to over a dozen communities throughout North America and across the world. In the UK, four other cities will also have a Kidical Mass this year on the day.
Meeting is at 11:30 in Regent’s Park, Gloucester Gate. We’ll have a snack before departing at noon for a ride on the park’s outer circle. We’ll re-assemble for a bring and share picnic, games and fun children obstacle courses.
