What Kind of Cargo Bike Should I Hire?

Here at London Green Cycles, we offer a variety of hire bikes for various uses. Hiring a cargo bike can be a great way to test out if it’s the right fit for your family or business, or it can for a special occasion or a fun weekend activity!

Currently, our hire fleet contains the following bikes (images at bottom of post):

Our bikes are quite popular, and may not be available immediately. For best results, please enquire a minimum of 1 week prior to the date you hope to hire and we can discuss availability with you. At any given time, we have a fleet of around 10-15 bikes available for hire.

For 1-2 Kids (Or Adults)

With just 1-2 kids to transport, the world is your oyster! Almost every bike we offer is suitable for you.

If you are looking for a 3-wheel bike, your options are the Christiania Straight Box or the Nihola Family.

• The Christiania Straight Box is our signature bike. It has a unique steering system suitable for people of almost all heights, and a large capacity in the box, perfect for your kids, dog, shopping, and anything else you want to throw in it! It’s very adaptable, with one hard bench with 1 lap belt and 1 Y-belt, and one soft seat with a lap belt. On the hard bench, you can attach a baby seat for babies as young as 3 months and/or a toddler seat for 9-18 months. Kids who have outgrown the toddler seat but need more support can use the Y-belt on its own. It also has a soft seat with a lap belt on the opposite side, seating up to 2 kids. It comes with a rain cover which keeps the kids inside warm and toasty even in cold or rainy conditions, and can be easily stashed under the hard bench when not in use. The 100Kg passenger capacity means you can carry passengers of all sizes and ages!
• The Nihola Family has front wheels which move independently from the box, which many people feel is more intuitive and more similar t0 a 2-wheeled bike compared to the Christiania. It also has a tall but low-to-the-ground box, which makes it suitable for taller kids while maintaining good visibility for the rider. It is suitable for shorter riders, to a minimum height of 152cm. It can be fitted with a toddler seat suitable for kids of 9-18 months. However, we only have a non-electric Nihola for hire currently, so if you need an electric bike this isn’t it!

If you’re interested in a 2-wheeler, you could go for an eBullitt, a Bakfiets Short, or a Bakfiets Long.

• The Bakfiets bikes are great for those who want a bucket bike that rides similarly to a standard Dutch bicycle and is comfortable at faster speeds. They have a very sturdy Azor frame and the electric versions feature a powerful Shimano STePs motor. Both the Short and Long have 1 bench with 2 Y-belts, and can optionally have up to 2 baby seats for babies as young as 3 months and/or toddler seats for 9-18 months. The Short cargo box is comfortable for 2 smaller kids, generally 1-5, or one larger child; the Long cargo box is suitable for older/bigger kids 5-10 years of age, or smaller kids with large cargo such as a pram. A rain cover can be included to keep passengers warm and dry.
• The eBullitt is our most popular bike for dedicated cyclists, with an aggressive, road-bike-like riding posture and top-of-the-line components throughout, including a Shimano STePs motor. The soft shell in front is best suited for one larger child, an adult, or an adult holding a smaller child.

For 3-4 Kids, or 2 Larger Kids

For 3+ kids, the only suitable bike we have for hire is the Christiania Straight Box. Most people with 3 or more kids prefer to hire an electric bike due to the weight.

• The Christiania Straight Box is our signature bike. It has a unique steering system suitable for people of almost all heights, and a large capacity in the box, suitable for up to 4 kids of various ages, with a bit of room left over under the seats for storage. It’s very adaptable, with one hard bench with 1 lap belt and 1 Y-belt, and one soft seat with 1 lap belt. On the hard bench, you can attach a baby seat for babies as young as 3 months and/or a toddler seat for 9-18 months. Kids who have outgrown the toddler seat but need more support, such as those under 3, can use the Y-belt on its own. It also has a soft seat with a lap belt on the opposite side, seating up to 2 kids. It comes with a rain cover which keeps the kids inside warm and toasty even in cold or rainy conditions, and can be easily stashed under the hard bench when not in use.

For 2 larger kids (generally kids over 5), you have three options: the Christiania Straight Box, the Bakfiets Long, or the Nihola Family.

For Delivery Work or Tool Transport

The most popular bike for delivery work and business transport is the eBullitt.

• The eBullitt is our most popular bike for businesses, with an aggressive, road-bike-like riding posture and top-of-the-line components throughout, including a Shimano STePs motor. It is the favourite of both delivery drivers and handymen.

Another popular option due to its larger carrying capacity, greater flexibility in cargo size, and ease of loading and unloading, is the Christiania Straight Box.

• The Christiania Straight Box can be provided with no seats to free up space in the box, or one seat which also functions as a lockable box. It can carry up to 100 Kg in weight and because the top is open, the total volume is flexible. It is also easy to load and unload from a stopped position, making it popular with market traders and bakeries.

For Moving House

The Christiania Straight Box is an ideal bike for moving house as its large, open box allows you to transport boxes or even furniture in a variety of sizes, and the 100Kg capacity means it can take even relatively heavy and large furniture like small sofas or loveseats. The Christiania is best for moving a lot of stuff at speeds of 12MPH or less.

Another great option for moving is the Bakfiets Long. It has a lower cargo capacity (up to 80 Kg) and a smaller box, but is more comfortable at higher speeds, making it a great option if you want to make more quicker journeys rather than a few larger ones.

For Film Crews

Overwhelmingly the most popular bike for film crews is the Christiania Straight Box. The size of the box and the large weight capacity (100Kg) allows for a cameraman to sit in the box with camera equipment, while the tricycle frame makes it easy to shoot at low speeds and stop or start moving quickly. The Promovec Motor style also features a walking throttle which can be used to smoothly control movement up to ±8 MPH, with additional pedal assist up to 15.5 MPH.

Another option for filming is the eBullitt with Passenger Set-Up. The eBullitt also features a max load capacity of 100Kg, but on a much more aggressive frame, enabling you to film high-speed scenes with ease. This is ideal when you need to move faster.
